While we are on the subject of tranny's, I was wondering if anyone as had as much trouble as I have with flex plates in the Auto type III's. This is the plate that is attached to the engine with the big 36mm bolt and attaches to the torque converter with three 13mm bolts. My problem has been in the last year I have broken 4 of these b/t my '70 Sqback (3) and '71 Fastback (1). I took a quess on the '70 Sqback and had the torque converter rebuildt with the last replacement assuming it was out of balance and flexing the plate too much. The failure is right on a bend and appears to be a fatigue crack. The one replacement in the Fastback is doing okay after 10,000 miles. Also I was wondering if anyone has a source for the rubber hose that goes from the body of the car to the input of the oil bath air cleaner. It is kinda of elongated, about 3 inches wide and an inch high. And the rubber elbow that goes from the output from the air cleaner to the air intake distributor. My VW parts shop says they are no longer available. I quess you have a collector's item when things are NLA. I also wanted to thank every one for there suggestions on the running rich message. I'm still working on it. Let you know how it turns out...
