Todd -- I'm sooo lucky -- I've got a set of three *and* a set of one!!! ;) I've been having fun with my polishing. It recently became evident that I won't be satisfied if I don't do a bunch of work on the inner suraces, too -- you can see the central disk and loads more of the interior surfaces from the outside, via the six main oval-ish holes. I just had another look at the picture you sent me recently, and it looks like they didn't touch the inner surfaces at all -- not even inside the ovals. All of the crud on the inside surfaces of my wheels is coming out nicely. I had been afraid that it was some kind of weird corrosion, but now I think it's abestos + drum/disk rust in some weird caked-on combo. It's all solid, original wheel under the crud. I'm using this 3M plasticy stripper wheel, but I bet media blasting would be the real ticket. Oh -- the goldish-looking surface in the lug holes is just the lightest coating of who-knows-what, and was easily removed. I'm enjoying using a friend's dremel -- 120grit sanding cylinders and 220(?)grit sanding discs are working wonders. You can mount a sanding disc backwards, with the rough surface pointing back toward the tool, to reach around the tough edges of the ovals. I really think the Eastwood kit begins where sanding leaves off on the turtle wheels. I'm going to still use sand paper by hand for a few areas of first-order smoothing. I think the turtles have rough surfaces really on purpose--if you look at the outer edges of the ovals, and the outer bits of the rim on the outside, not to mention the inner surfaces, they really aren't so rough as the main bits of the outer wheel -- the parts that seem to be commonly painted. I picked up a 2,500rpm drill yesterday to use instead of my 1,300rpm drill, so perhaps work will go a little faster. This polishing is a masochistic addiction... -Greg p.s.: going to Vallejo this year? Sacto? p.p.s.: I'm gonna cc: to the list, and just file this as an "official" progress report. ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
