I was only a half quart high and it smoked on decel.

Drain all the oil out, leave it overnight.  Do the strainer too.  Then
refill with 2.5 Qts, let it all settle in and mark the dipstick where the
oil level is.

There is a way to change the filler tube to calibrate the stick so it shows
full on the full mark but only Russ is likely to have that tube calibrating
tool and Ive found that it cant be rotated enough on its studs anyway, so I
just put a new mark on the stick.
