If one is actually weaker, then it's possible that one spring has been removed, 
but it's more likely that what you're observing is actually just due to one 
being sticky rather than a stronger spring. This one probably needs those 
couple drops of oil.

The linkage on the chokes should pull them open once you actually open the 
throttle a bit. Of course it's also possible that something here is not working 
because of an assembly or wear problem.

That's correct.

Just using a normal timing light can also tell you a lot about your mech adv. 
You should be able to just watch and see whether the advance comes in smoothly 
or sticks and then advances all at once, which appears to have been your 
problem with the other dist.
