[T3] Perfecting a '71 Sunroof Squareback
<x-flowed>Yesterday I finished wiring up the fuse box. I had to do some educated
guessing of the location of a couple of wires, but they were the last wires
in. This way there would be a greater chance that they went on the right
spade. Notes turned out to be invaluable, and the Bentley less so. I am
beginning to believe the P.O. about it being sold in the German market; the
wiring is different than what the American wiring schematic shows.
Then, after everything was in place, I realized that I had mislaid the fuses
(I am now using a checks box for all the miscellaneous I find around in the
auto, fits perfectly in the glove box with the butter dish of petroleum
jelly.). Buy some more, and put them in. I just could not help myself; so
I put the ground lead on the battery, and turned the key. Wow, my idiot
lights are working! The relays clicked, pushed the button, no start, try
again, and it roars to life. The lights go out, as my Dad's '64 Beetle did,
so those are working, and the systems are fine. Is it normal for one to
smell a burning smell after stating from sitting for a while?
Since it was running, I thought I would take it around the block. When I
tried to pull away from the curb it would not budge. Checked the emergency
brake; it was all the way to the floor. Is there a way to adjust it so it
is not so loose and floppy when you release the brakes? Recently the back
brake(s) where sticking/banging. Dad said it was some what normal. Give it
some gas, BANG! I launch from the curb.
I took it around, and notice an occasional faint scraping noise. Also, the
turn signal indicators in the gauge were erratic. They would glow, and then
for a period flash, then go back to glowing, etc. They were not affected by
the turn signal switch. I also did not here the relay clicking when the
lights would flash. Could it be because I am using the wrong relay? The
auto supply did not have one small enough.
The Squareback seems to run better, especially the jerking when I let off
the accelerator. To fun to go home, so I take it around the neighborhood,
and go up the hill on which I had gotten stuck at the stop sign at the top.
This time, I stayed in second until over the hump, put it in first, and did
a rolling stop. Mr. Wolfe was right about not stopping if possible. When I
was about home, I noticed that burning smell again. Felt the wiring, not
hot; none of the fuses blew. Then I checked the engine compartment when I
got home, nothing noticeable.
Sincerely,
Adriel H. Rowley
