I don't recall that, and I was around mechanics and auto parts stores
when that engine was in its prime- late 80's-early 90's. I rarely sold
rod bearings for those, but I did sell oil pumps. It had a great oil
pump design from a mechanic's standpoint- you could change it without
removing the pan, and the kit came with different springs for different
oil pressures based on what type of duty it would be in.

I imagine it helps on rotor tip wear too.

Its not modern engineering. It's modern customers. Joe Average wants an
oil change for $20 in 20 minutes. They get pissy when they find out you
need an oil change that costs $60-80.

We also live in a disposable society. Lots of people lease their cars,
so they don't care if the car lasts 10 years. No one does their own work
anymore- all the onboard computers scare people, but in my opinion
they've made the job in many ways easier because you can plug a
diagnostic device and it will tell you what's wrong.

Newer cars will last a very long time if properly cared for. I fully
intend to get 200k+ out of my '03 Passat (which translates to 10 years).
With 70,000 miles, I had an oil sump was clean and sludge free when I
dropped the pan (I bottomed out and put a crack in the old one). But I
take very good care of this car.

The newer oils will last longer too. I would argue that a good Group IV
synthetic (i.e. Mobil1 or German Castrol) would be good for 10-15,000
miles between changes on a non-turbo engine. Modern conventional oils
are good for 5000 in severe duty service.
