With stock tires, I find that if I slip a hand under the fender rim 
it will just run over the top of a front tire and not quite over a 
rear.

Sure, but the gas shocks I've seen all failed rather quickly. I think 
there is a clearance issue there that means the gas shocks rub 
against something and wear where they weren't designed to. Different 
makes of gas shocks might do better than the ones that came on my 
'72.
