Just saw your second post. It's quite possible to have just a few turns of one of the windings short out to one another. This will still ruin the coil even though the change in measured resistance is insignificant.
I'm going to give Dave's tests a chance, but I'm pretty sure the grounding is all fine, and that the points aren't shorted out. As for my multimeter, it does have a pretty small resolution, and indeed I measured 3.5 ohm- i just wasn't looking at the right range in my tests.
Jim, I'll get back to you tomorrow on my findings, and if I'm gonna need one of your coils.
BTW, my first Fasty also had an OE coil fail too- that was 13 years ago. What are the odds?
