Re: [T3] Looking for tools

<x-flowed>I've used circlip pliers and a pencil and I think the pencil has more control. If all you need to just rotate the gear to get it in the right radial position, then you can lift just enough to let it slip a tooth without it's centre coming clear of the washers, so they can't fall down. But you need the petrol pump and guide removed and the car should be in the number 1 firing position to get it out, certainly on the older engines. I read that the gears are machined differently now so you can remove it in any position but my experience has always been that it needs to be on number 1 firing. Whateve you do, don't rotate the engine at all while fitting the gear to help it back into mesh or it will likely gouge the tips of the brass gear on the crank. (Yes I did that, but fortunately it didn't cause any problems!)

I always use a #2 pencil. The writing end isn't
sharpened, just shaved down enough to be a tight fit
in the hole in the top of the gear. I just push it in
then pull and wiggle gently till the gear comes out. Since I have to go carefully it helps prevent losing
the washers. It's also works for replacing the gear. I just give it a little twist once the gear is
engaged, and it slips right out of the hole.

This particular pencil always stays in my toolbox.

I think you can buy the actual tool from JC Whitney.
