If this is an O-ring flywheel, then you must not use either gasket
(paper or metal) between the two - just the O-ring.
<snip>
You will usually need different shims if you replace these parts,
but the old ones should get you reasonably close.
Thanks guys. It was the crappy O-ring from my gasket kit getting
pinched. Even with oil on it, it wouldn't slip past the nose of the
crank. I went and got a nice grey one which looks graphited, and it
just slipped on fine. Gap is now 1.25mm which needed 4 shims to take
out, but all is OK.
It was a basic question, but I'm in a hurry to get the car back on the
road for a trip to the German T3 meeting at Wolfsburg in 1 month, so I
don't want any hold ups! Having your answers ready for the next day in
the workshop helped a lot.
