What I have done this evening was run a hone in the offending cylinder, wirebrushed the carbon off the valves, lapped the valve and the seats, and put the head back . . . . WITH A FRESH BEAD OF HIGH TEMP SILICONE . . . . (?) Huh? . . . . . .and torqued everything.
Where are you applying the RTV ("silicone")?

Between the bottom of the cylinder and the case. Where the little tiny paper gasket usually goes. This has been pretty standard practice, from my understanding, with a lot of engine builders and this motor was rebuilt that way 35,000 miles ago without any issues.
