Hi Keith: I get copied on all the chatter about type III's, and I need a VW
enthusiast's opinion.. There is a 69 squareback in museum condition in
illinois i was considering buying. It is very expensive, they are asking
$12900, but i was considering offering $9000 because of the exceptional
condition.

I believe you had a typo in their asking price, as it now appears to be
$10,900. I agree that on the surface it appears to be in very nice condition,
but one would want to verify that up close. Even if it's as nice as it looks,
their asking price is probably more than double what the market might get for
this car.
There are a lot of things that you really can't see in their photos, but here
are a few points that I CAN see and that aren't mentioned in their writeup:
The dash is cracked. Almost all of them are, but a "museum condition" one wouldn't be.
The radio antenna is bent, and it's the wrong style. Not really the kind a
dealer would install, and not a good fit to the fender. OTOH, this is easily
corrected.
I THINK I can see a crack in the hub of the steering wheel, but that may just
be a shadow. Cracks here are extremely common, and not a safety issue, but not
"museum condition" either.
There's some kind of black spot to the right of the front license plate mount.
It appears to be a vent of some kind, with a circle of small screw heads around
it. I don't know what it is, but it's not stock and it's probably not dealer
installed. Have you ever seen anything like this, Russ?
It DOES have the original spark plug wire distributor ends, but the wires aren't correctly routed. Easily fixed.
In my opinion, '69 is a very desirable year; '69s come with a lot of
improvements over the earlier type 3s and yet still maintain the classy early
body style. Too bad it doesn't have the factory optional sunroof. That would
certainly add to its value.
