Old favourite trick of VWs - been doing it for years. I think I first had it happen in the early '70s. Something dries up with a hot journey, expands, or something else and if the wire joints are getting a bit of oxidation, and the starter motor commutator and brushes are dirty and/or worn, it just becomes too much for the circuit and the starter doesn't start engaging, so never switches full power to the starter motor. You probably don't need a new starter motor, though it may cure the problem for a while. You may just need to clean things up in the starter motor. It may just be poor connections to the solenoid. Try shorting across the two connections on the solenoid (not in gear!) and the starter motor should turn. That proves the starter hasn't failed completely. It will probably work fine until the next long drive. I used to find that flicking the starter switch immediately after stopping often allowed it to work fine next time. If you want to see what to do inside the motor, there's a description and diagrams at www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/starter.htm One other possibility is the bush in the bell-housing, but this doesn't sound like that.
