<x-flowed>I don't really know, but I always understood you get all the play in all 
parts ie  both sides of the roller surfaces etc when there's no tension 
on it in the centre, so it feels wider, but when it's turned 90degrees 
the tension from the wheels reduces it.  I'm not sure if that's logical 
though.
