Re: [T3] steering rebuild

<x-flowed>John,
Congratulations on your win!
There is another steering box adjustment (slightly harder to do) which is the big bottom adjuster on the box. It screws in to the bottom of the box and is held in adjustment by a 41mm nut. Slacken the nut and it allows you to adjust the end play on the worm gear. The serrated internal dupression in the adjuster actually needs a VW 278a wrench to fit it perfectly, but you can usually rotate it without this once the big nut is slack. With the front lifted, adjust this screw plate up until there is no up and down play in the worm. If when you've done it, the steering binds anywhere from lock to lock, then you need to back it off a bit. The proper sequence is do the worm end play first and then the adjustment on the top of the box for the roller-to-worm play that you already adjusted.

There should be a max of 1 inch play on the steering wheel with the car on the ground and the steering wheel turned 90degrees from straight. There may be a bit more in the central position.

Hey folks, does anyone know if the steering gear box on the early T3's can be rebuilt? Last time I was under the car, I replaced the steering dampner and tightened down the nut on top of the gear box but I still get what I think is alot of play in the wheel. Yesterday coming home from the maple grove show it was kinda windy and the car was all over the road. (BTW- took first place)
