Re: [T3] Dash Electricals

<x-flowed>This is the first time since I've owned this car that I've had
to take off the light cluster from the back of the housing.
I've never had to replace a bulb.

What's there is two sets of lights. One set has a shared
hot lead (black wire) from the switch lead from the ignition
switch via the fuse box. Each circuit is completed by a
grounding of the other end, such as the oil pressure switch.

The other set of lights is provided grounding via a lug to
the gage housing and then via the housing to the metal
dash through the sprung clips.

All of the individual lights tested good, but what my real
nemesis is corrosion. At some point a long long time ago
I fired off a fire extinguisher under the dash due to smoke
from a fire under there. Later on I realized it was electrical
and I just needed to shut the ignition off. Young and stupid.
The damage had been done. That fire extinguishing material
oxidized everything exposed under the dash and left a mess
of powder everywhere.

Connections, even after brushing are still intermittent.

Any suggestions on how to clean up these connections other
than the obvious elbow grease, stiff brush, and time?

I've posted some pictures on thesamba in the T3 Squareback
category, search for Jeff67sqbk <http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=32588>

I'll add a ground wire to one of the screws on the back of
the housing that is used to access the fuel gage. This should
alleviate the grounding of the housing problem.

I believe there is a single wire which runs up to the gauge cluster that should get switched 12V.
