Anything's possible, but I've never seen or heard of a leak at the
seam. They generally rust out on the bottom, only where water can
settle. Any chance this tank sat with ~5 gal of water somewhere for a
few years?

I'm generally leary of the tank sealants, just because they can seal
up small passages and eventually start to flake loose, causing even
more problems. There may not be any small passages in an early tank,
but if you can see a sort of cup spot welded to the bottom of the
tank when you remove the gas sender, then I would definitely NOT use
the sealer. That would probably seal you right out of business.
