I would suspect some rings that are tired. 
As for the "head gasket" that is a copper ring that goes on 40hp and
36hp between the cylinder and the head, just above the fins. On fresh
air engines like ours, I have never seen them. I do know that VW
continued to use them on 40hp even with fresh air from the factory,
because as the engine was being built, up to the long block, they didnt
know if it would be fresh air, or non-freshair.
