Is there any reasonable way of fixing this without removing & replacing
the seal?

Yes, unfortunately I forgot what it is called. It's a 3M product. IIRC it was made of linseed oil, kaolin and something to make it black. It came in caulking gun cartridges.

It was pretty much a thick black goo that I injected in the glass and metal sides and it worked wonders. I think I had the only cars with running water and it stopped.

The beauty of this stuff is that it doesn't bond to any surfaces so it won't make replacement difficult in the future. I think that it swells a little when it gets wet so the seal stays good for a while, two winters for me.]

The downside is that is is a major chore to get it off anything you didn't want it on.

I'll look in my car tomorrow when there is some light to see if I can get an actual name and part number.
