I believe you. I suspect there's absolutely nothing wrong with your 
tank. The only one I've ever had to replace was one that someone else 
had punched a hole in (ON PURPOSE!!!)

FYI, it's more than just a hole. It's actually a kind of pump. The 
returning gas comes straight up the pipe, but it drags some of the 
gas from the main part of the tank in along with it so that the 
center cup will fill to a higher level than the main tank. In use, 
the center tank will stay completely full until the main tank is 
completely empty. This has the advantage of giving you access to 
every bit of gas in the tank, but also the disadvantage that once the 
tank is empty it's REALLY empty.

Since there are so many other places that are more likely to leak 
gas, my guess is that even his old tank was fine.

In general, I think the only tanks that really need to be replaced 
are those which sat open in the rain for 5-15 years.
