Some of the hitches had a centre stand-off which bolted to an angle reinforcement bar in the corner between the rear lower panel and air intake duct floor. It adds up to a fair bit of strength, but your point about corrosion of the bumper mounts is a fair one if you're going to pull a large load. One of the designs has forward arms that bolt through the inner wheel well as well as the bumper mounts. Check the metal carefully and go ahead if it's good! Plenty of people tow with them. Mine saved the rear bumper when a Volvo hit, but the rear panel was knocked about a bit. Dave.
