Re: [T3] Automatic tranny in a 69 and air cleaner
<x-flowed>DavidE=> the car has dual carbs. I was told that someone must have
=> changed it over from FI.
This is likely, but not necessarily so. Automatics were built by VW with
dual carbs through the end of production, though they were not generally
for sale new in the US. Of course, many of these cars are no longer in
the country they were shipped to originally.
=> There is no air cleaner and I think I have one, but it doesnt quite fit.
Your first purchase for this car should be a good manual, which will
show you in diagrams which parts are stock and which are not. Stock
carbs would be Solex PDSITs. The stock air cleaner is black tin covering
both carbs, with a coir "filter" in an oil bath, drawing its air from the
air plenum at the right rear corner. This is the best setup available
for performance and cooling with a stock motor.
=> The thottle linkage hits it.
Your linkage is non-stock.
=> if this is some kind of aftermarket setup ... Im screwed and need
some kind
=> of air cleaner setup.
The usual air-cleaner stup for non-stock single-throat carbs (Weber,
etc.) are little foam disc elements clamped to the throats, commonly
found wherever Baja parts are sold.
I'd suggest that you get the manual and carefully evaluate your fuel
system before you start buying parts. You may find that bits have been
left out or bypassed that are important to the proper performance of
your transaxle. Like ripping out perfectly good FI to replace it with
problematic carbs, this is another common bodge.
It's quite normal to come into Typee 3 land with a car that's been
abused by previous owners and poorly informed Type 1 mechanics. You're
not alone.
