I had one do this years ago in my '72 Beetle. Even
after I turned the engine off the generator light
actually glowed about half brightness. And I could
hear and smell the batery boiling. I had to remove
the ground strap from the batery to get it to stop.
I was close to home so a few hours later when I went
to go, I was able to hook the batery back up and drive
even with the lights on. I removed the strap when I
got home, I think the batery even lasted a few years
after that.

Cheers,
