Also I think I have your original problem straight, (Bad gas mileage, and mechanic says you need a rebuild) If your generator light is coming on, or flickering at odd times this might explain your bad gas mileage. The Fuel Injection is very dependant on electrical system voltage. If the volts are below 12, the FI will run rich, very rich. So you may not need that engine rebuild afterall ;-) As for the generator light and the health of the charging system, just ask Jim A for his Charging System Trouble Shooting Guide.
