I'm using a 12V sender in my 63 Notch (still 6V) without any problem. Turn your key on then disconnect the wire at the sender then ground it. If your gauge now reads full you've got a problem with the sender. These can sometimes be fixed but I didn't have much luck with this. I had to try a few used units before I got one to work.
