They can also bend sideways. Plus some of the replacements available
aren't that great -- I had one fail shortly after installation when the
weld holding the arm to the shaft broke, and the cutouts for the
throwout bearing weren't at all round.
Ultimately, I picked up a Bugpack "heavy duty" version with arms that
encircle the shaft, and had to re-work it before I was happy. Welded
both sides of the arms (was only welded on one side originally), ground
the cutouts for the bearing, turned down the end to fit the stock
bearing. After that everything was peachy for *years*.
