You should fit the 'piston retaining plates' - they only come in rebuild kits anyway, and are meant to be re-used. The piston face is notched to accept them and your pads will wear unevenly if not used. I had a similar problem with the replacement calipers using original style pads. There is a flat plate (shim) supplied with a small wire (now rusty) spring that clips it to the disc - anti-squeal? - rather than a spreader spring. The original style pad (from my stocks!) has a deep central recess to receive the spreader spring, while the thin plate is cut higher. I fitted old spreader springs as the clips wouldn't work, but they were holding the flat plate away from the pads, meaning the pedal had to push the pistons out a bit before there was any braking - only half the pedal movement was available. I notched the shims to match the pads - it'll be at least a year or two before I have to reassess the situation, depending on the style of pads available. Dave.
