It's reasonable to be concerned; the fact that you're paranoid doesn't
mean
they're NOT out to get you. ;-)

Where were you
measuring this temp, and have you calibrated your gauge in
boiling water?
It's a VDO 300 deg gauge with the sender at the pressure relief valve.
I've never calibrated the gauge. Great idea! I assume this would entail
bringing a pot of water to boil, and then dipping the sending unit into
the water, turning on the ignition, and checking the gauge reading
against 212F to find out the deviation (?). Anything I should know before
attempting this stunt at home? (For example, does the sending unit need
to be grounded? Will I fry anything if the wire connector gets wet?).
