The early ones without the cold air bleed and thermostat control get hot enough to make rubber mats smell - had a school-kid in the back cover the outlet with the floor mat rather than ask me to turn the rear heat down in my '64! Foam prevents ventilation of the surface which means accelerated rust if there's moisture getting in. Dave.
