I don't know if anyone's tried this before, but I would expect the biggest 
problem to be the fact that most of the duct, the part in the rocker area, 
isn't round.

Could be a problem. The type 3 heaters get very hot when they are working 
right.

Depends on what car you have and maybe what year. Some parts are readily 
available, some are very hard to find.
