I'm pretty sure that your first choice should be to look for type 3 shocks. 
Type 1 shocks will often fit, but they will have less damping since they were 
designed for a lighter car.

I suspect that you could use late type 3 front shocks in an early type 3. For 
rears, you have to divide the cars into IRS and swing axle. I'm pretty sure 
that a '68 type 3 rear shock would work in '61-68, but IRS rears are different.

It happens that swing axle type 3 rear shocks will work as front type 3 shocks. 
They will be a bit stiffer than the OE shocks, but some people will like that. 
They fit just fine.
