The light is wired between your generator output and the part of the fuse box that is energized by the ignition switch. The light goes on whenever there is enough of a voltage difference between those 2 points to light it up. Normally both points are at about 14 V so there is no voltage difference between them. If turning on your wipers makes the light go on, it probably doesn't mean that there's something wrong with the wiper motor. It probably means that either there is too much resistance between those points, so that the extra current drain produces a significant voltage drop, or that there's too much current, which has the same effect, or that the generator is having trouble putting out enough current to keep up with this demand. You should look for this voltage drop and find out where it occurs. It may be in the ignition switch, or you may find that the generator voltage drops when this happens, or maybe the wiper shaft bushings need to be lubricated so that the motor doesn't have to work so hard. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
