I've made modifications to address more or less the same issues, and
I've been very happy with the results.
I can recommend the taller ring and pinion modification highly; I had it
done by Rancho, and aside from requiring noticeably more torque to get
going in first, it serves me very well, giving me 85mph at about 3500rpm
in fourth, which is right in the power curve of my motor (1641cc, 110 cam).
I added the 1.5 quart sump; my rear is at a little under stock height,
and I've never worried about it, but I do pay attention to what I'm
driving over, as the front is lower. What has made the real difference
in cooling, however, is my Type 4 oil cooler, which requires modifying
the left upper cylinder cover but is otherwise bolt-on.
