The even less alarming possibility is that *nothing* broke, but the distributor wasn't locked in as tight as it should have been. It crept up, lost hold of the drive cog and the rest is history. I guess I need to learn to be a lot more FIRM in testing the tightness of some things. The car itself is a lot less gentle toward itself than I in some respects it seems. Thanks for the advice all! I'd have been wracking my brain over this one for sure without the list.
