On Nov 15, 1886, Robert Bosch opened a "Workshop for Precision Mechanics and Electrical Engineering". From the Bosch company official history: "In 1887, Bosch first designed a magneto ignition system for stationary internal-combustion engines. Like many other Bosch products of those years, this magneto was not a Bosch invention. It was, rather, fabricated to a customer's order on the basis of an existing sample built by Deutz, an engine manufacturer in Cologne. This is where Bosch profited from the practical experience he had gained over many years during his travels as a precision mechanic in electrical engineering companies. He recognized that the sample magneto from Cologne would not have a very long service lie, and thus altered the as yet unpatented original to such an extent that it stood up to even the toughest practical applications." Another thing most people don't know about Bosch, is that he spent 1884 and 1885 in the USA, where he worked for a short while for Thomas Edison.
