I expect you know the area well enough to have spotted this, but for 
general info, I've had something like this happen (on my Type 4), where 
the spring keeper splines on one of the valves collapsed. This caused 
the spring to slip up the shaft, but not off. Before we figured it out 
it seemed like it had stretched. In the end we found that the valve 
metallurgy was bad.
