If the stud is still intact, it's worth almost anything to get it to 
work again. Anything else is much more work. Any attempt to just 
unscrew the stud from the head will fail, probably with a broken 
stud.  You can try a small die, but they can be hard to get in there. 
There may be special thread chasing dies made for this that might 
work well in tight quarters.

Every bolt on this car, other than the seat belt bolts, is metric. So 
I assume your brother has learned a lesson about trying to use random 
nuts that just looked similar. The exhaust nuts are M8 x 1.25 thread.
