After that, they started to claim that it was good forever. I've never had much problem with it, but I change it occasionally, at least every 100k mi. If you do, make sure to clean the crud out of the drain plug, as there is a magnet there which collects iron bits and this magnet gets full after awhile. I've even seen suggestions that you can pull the drain plug while the fill plug is in there, and quickly push a cork into the drain hole while you clean the drain magnet. Then you have to go back and top up the gear oil. Our transmissions need gear oil meeting the GL-4 spec. I believe I've heard that modern gear oils all satisify this spec, but I'm not sure about that. In general, you want a GL-4 oil and NOT a GL-5 oil. This MAY be somewhat hard to find these days. Sorry, but I can't be more specific than that, as I've not had to shop for it for a long time, since I have a 5 gallon bucket of GL-4 in the garage. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
