First off, there's the greater familiarity of the car (vs any T3, even the T34), and secondly, with modern powertrain systems, they could actually make it perform quite nicely- something the original really couldn't do. It's hard to make a retro product that appeals to such a tiny community (such as ours) have real mass appeal. It would be like a retro Rabbit/Golf A1.
