I finally started my engine this morning, after about four months of working
on it. It sounds brilliant - it must be the new fan and the fact the the
engine tin doesn't rattle any more. Now it needs a full tune up and
hopefully I will be able to get it tested on Thursday - the old test ran out
a couple of weeks ago - and be back on the roads by the weekend.

That's terrific, but what's next, and what will you do with all the time on
your hands once it's completely finished?

Working, making a living . . . Also, now that the engine's so shiny, I have to get the rest of the car to match!

Here's the (almost) finished item:

Nice, it looks almost finished.

It took me a moment to realize what the small blue wires in the middle of the
engine were. They appear to be homemade wires for the AT kickdown switch. The
OE wires would have been black and would have had an in-line fuse between the +
term of the coil and the switch so that a shorted kickdown wire wouldn't hurt
anything other than just the fuse.

Yes, that's what the blue wire is. I has an inline fuse on the other wire, which goes from the switch to the coil. That wire is quite long, so the inline fuse is tucked away at the side by the coil, and is invisible in the picture. Both wires need shortening a bit. All my wiring is homemade (!), so maybe some day it would be nice to put some original wiring harnesses in.
