I bet it's a broken crank, between throw 1 and 3. In the ad the seller says it was fine and just started making the noise all of a sudden, one morning. It'll run with a broken crank, but make a racket. The case center main is probly pretty pounded out to. Stock dune buggy motors usually get wound up real high and held there. Usually in 2nd gear climbing hills cause they don't make enough power to pull 3rd gear, and 1st is nothing. So, the rpm depends on the tires and the sand. Hills are slowly climbed by flooring it and leaving it in 2nd. Crank usually gets a crack and then breaks the next time it is started up when cold. "I dunno, it just started making a noise." The exhaust looks like a street type 3, if you look at the picture, the muffler could be rotated 120 to the right and be horizontal, to just fit in front of the apron. How do you find these, Jim? It's not under engines and parts, or VW engines, etc. I'd sure like to know what your search criteria is on ebay.
