[T3] Auto tranny TLC

<x-flowed>Hi all,

As some of you know, my car is off the road at the moment. I am doing an "exterior overhaul" on the engine - cleaning the engine up, replacing the fan and fan housing, installing a thermostat, painting some on the engine tin, replacing some more and adding bits of tin that were missing up till now. When this is finished I will have a full set of engine tin for the first time.

Here is my engine as it looks right now:

As it's going to be a while before I have all the parts I need to put everything back together, I was wondering whether it would be an idea to give the tranny some TLC too - take of the pan (hopefully I won't find broken bits of brake bans like Greg did), clean the filter, clean the governor, replace gaskets, etc.

I have a full gasket set. Is there anything I should know about before I start doing this? I have a bottle of very lethal solvent that I bought to dip my carbs in, but never used. Is this suitable for cleaning the governor? Is it safe to spray the whole of the outside of the tranny and diff with Gunk Engine Brite? What am I likely to screw up? Is there anything else I should do while its open? Sorry for the million questions, but I've never done this before, and I find the tranny a bit daunting.

Thanks,

Daniel
