My 73 Squareback starts and idles fine but some times at about 30 -40mph it
starts to buck around. This happens even when the engine is warm. It also
happens at higher speeds only not as bad. It seems like if you're doing
65mph and start to go up a very slight grade it will trigger this bucking.
It's got stock fuel injection. What could be the problem?
Here's a test to check out one possibility: Just unplug the throttle position
switch (TVS.) That's the plug that goes into the black box mounted on the right
end of the throttle valve shaft. Just unplug it and drive it that way for a few
days. If THAT problem goes away, you need a new TVS.
During this test, if you drive the car spiritedly, you may notice a
sluggishness or hesitation which wasn't there before. That's simply due to the
lack of a TVS, so don't confuse that with the bucking and missing that you're
watching for.
Let us know what you find in your test.
