I fill up each time. I don't know how else you could do it, other 
than keep a running record so that you could add up all the gas and 
all the miles for a rather long time period. Then you'd have only the 
error of one fillup to deal with.

Why not fill up the tank each time? In the long run it's no 
different.

I have a little notebook in the glove box of each car and every 
tankful gets recorded with date odo reading and gals. There are 
spaces where I can come back later and enter miles (the difference 
between the last 2 odo readings and divide by the gals. This way I 
can look back and see how things have varied over the years and 
seasons.

The best part is that when something goes wrong, I can see it in a 
sudden change in the mileage trend.

With some effort, I think I could dig up the notebooks from every car 
I ever had, starting with my '62 Beetle.
