If you have to destroy something, destroy the round plate in the center
to remove the shift rod. Easier to replace.

I know this might sound like a long shot, but have you tried pulling the
cable AND the sheath together from the inside? It might be a case of the screw
missing inside the glove box, allowing the mechanism to move. If not you might
have to resort to really drastic measures, ie... drilling a 1/4" hole about 1"
right of center about 1" down from the sealing lip, then use a lever to move
the release arm. This isn't my 1st choice, but it can help release the lid if
ALL other methods have failed. I hope this helps.
