Item 1: Yes, if your clutch hasn't needed adjustment for a long time and
now does suddenly, you probably have a clutch cable starting to fray.

Item 2: You shouldn't have to bend it. You should be able to lift the
bottom edge, and then finagle it out without bending it.
As for adjusting the pedal stop, remember that the stop also is for the
brake pedal. Make sure you still have clearance between the brake push
rod and the master cylinder. There should be about 1-2mm clearance.
