I would have expected the 31 deg to be okay, but I could be wrong. It's
probably worth trying Brian's suggestion and go ahead and buy an expensive tank
of gas to see what that will let you get away with.

Don't worry I haven't finished messing about with it yet :~)

Even if retarding the timing solves the problem - and I'm curious to see how the car performs with by-the-book timing - I will still try advancing the timing back to 31 degrees with high-octane petrol, to see whether that works too, as it gives me an bit of extra pep.
