There are some sealants that just won't work on oily surfaces, parts have to be 
perfectly clean to work with them.

I have had problems with the bottom halves of the case not lining up perfectly 
at the sump plate. I don't know why this can happen, but I've taken to checking 
that seam with my finger whenever I assemble a case. If there's any noticable 
step there, I will loosen the case half bolts nearby and then bolt on a sump 
plate to pull things into alighment, and retighten the bottom case half bolts.

The first time I noticed this, I did it to an engine which was already rather 
broken in. I was worried that moving the case halves would break the sealant 
that was there, but I was able to improve the leak significantly.
