Right as I sent that link, I was wondering the same myself, trying to 
remember exactly when it "magically appeared." I believe my text may be 
slightly incorrect. If I recall correctly, it was sitting on top of the 
cylinders, wedged between the two on the topside. Is it possible I took 
the cylinders off without first removing the oil cooler, and therefore I 
didn't see it there?

I remember seeing the spark plug first, as I thought what might have 
happened with the poor compression in #3 (before I found the broken 
ring) was that the plug might have become wedged between the block and 
one of the fins, not allowing me to torque down the heads properly 
against the cylinders.

So I'm not quite sure, but I believe it was on the top, lost between the 
cylinders. Was certainly a surprise to me.
