More info for everyone:

No its certainly not +ve earth. The mounting legs are the
earthing point and they are isolated from the shell.
Its definately intended for ACVW applications, as the
instructions mention bus & beetle.

I've scanned the instuctions, and taken a closeup of
the top of the VR : http://vw1600e.org.uk/regulator/

There is no warning in the instructions.
